Geographic distribution
201 species are breeding in Madagascar, and 66 of them are Passeriformes, which live outside forest habitats. 90.5% of endemic passerine species in Madagascar are found in forest habitat. In
each of the regions and areas of Madagascar, the breeding species are
mainly found in forest habitats, highlighting the predominant role of
this type of habitat for Malagasy birds. This role is evidenced by the fact that 85 (80%) of the endemic species depend on forest habitats. If
we consider only the 114 species of forest birds, this means that three
out of four species in the Malagasy forests are endemic.
